This book is packed full of important nutrition information ! I not only read it myself, but purchased copies for everyone I work with, who also found it valuable.
Fourteen foods to improve your health Rating:
5 / 5
After reading this book I bought copies for my mother, stepmother, brother, and all my kids. This book brings together all the latest research into the effect of food on health, including cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and diabetes. Steven Pratt analyzed all this research to come up with 14 foods he feels give you the most nutritional value for the calories. He tells you which foods to choose, how much to consume each day for the maximum health impact, what nutrients each of these foods provides, what health benefits they provide, and what other related foods offer the same nutrients. He also includes recipes for each food. You owe it to yourself to read this book!

SuperFoods Rx is essentially a guide to a diet. However, that diet is different from the one's you've probably heard about in two very important ways-- 1) It's a positive diet. Instead of telling you what not to eat, it's a list of foods you SHOULD eat. Though you'll probably end up deciding to not eat certain foods after checking out this book, it's primarily a guide of good things to put into your body. 2) It's not about weight loss, it's about health--long term health. The foods in this book are chosen not only to promote a good-feeling, well-working body in the short term, they'll also help you in the long term, providing protection against many common discomforts of old age as well as the more deadly hazards of poor nutrition, such as cancer.
The author of this book is a medical doctor, but rather than trying to feed you some fad diet of his own invention, he chooses his superfoods (and sidekicks; foods that are similar to each superfood) based on a body of peer-reviewed scientific evidence--that means MANY scientific experiments that prove the same thing and have been approved by the scrutiny of other scientists.
Each chapter tells about a different food, the different health benefits it offers, WHY it is so good for you, and also suggests some recipes and different brands/products you can buy that contain the food. There's also an extensive list of recipes and products at the book's end.
I found this book very informative, its advice easy to put into use (I like to use a small card to remind me of the servings of each food I should be eating each day), and I also found the book clear and easy to understand. Just like Michael Pollan says in The Omnivore's Dilemma--we live in an age where we are offered so many processed foods that we often don't know what's good or bad for us anymore. This book is a very effective guide for navigating the supermarket in a healthy way, and I recommend it to people all time. Check it out--it's in your body's best interest!
