A quick, pleasant, flawed read Rating:
3 / 5
I came into this book with little expectations, having seen Michael J. Fox only in the Back to the Future series; I also knew peripherally that he had Parkinson's disease. "Lucky Man" is a fast read and pleasant, concentrating on bringing his disease to light to a ignorant public. I give it three (and a half) stars, however, because I have two major issues with the book: first, that he glosses over the 10 years he spent on the wild side in a couple of sentences (which is important because he spends so much time writing about how reformed he is - but really, reformed from what?), and second, Fox demonstrates a weak moral compass and character which makes it hard for me to identify with him - he stands for nothing except himself and is affable to people, as he states, because it will help bring him success. Fox also mentions repeatedly that the changes he made to his life are profound and system-bucking, yet almost every celebrity settles down and a great deal of them opt for some modicrum of privacy for their families. The National Enquirer could care less; there's always a new group of celebs to dish on. I'd really like to know what is so special about this guy other than his disease.
Very personal and touching story Rating:
5 / 5
Wow!! Michael narrates with such honesty and at times on the CD you can tell that his voice is wavering from his illness. It takes bravery to tell your story with all the good, bad and ugly. I found his story very moving and I came away knowing more about Parkinson's disease and how devastating it can be to a person that has it, as well as their family. I have hope that a cure will be found.
Phenomenal Piece of Work Rating:
5 / 5
I have always been a fan of Michael J. Fox and I was late in getting his book, I had only just bought it in December 2006 but let me tell you, for me it was definately worth the wait. This book is a phenomenal piece of writing it is spiritual, uplifting, enlightening and really shows you what an amazing individual Michael J. Fox really is. I highly recommend other people to read this book and discover for yourself what a "Lucky Man" Michael J. Fox is.
