Man's best friends on the trip to Nome Rating:
4 / 5
Great adventure story. Takes all of us into the Alaskan wilderness and the wonder of nature. Winterdance makes us sensitive to the relationship between animals and man and their importance in navigating the hazards of the Alaskan winter. While there is no mention of the reason behind the first Iditarod to Nome, the story was powerful enough to initiate a web search for that medical background.
Funny and Touching Story Rating:
5 / 5
I read this book in one night because it was so funny and compelling. Then my fiance and I took turns reading it out loud to each other. In one hilarous moment, Paulson describes having his pants catch on fire because there are matches in his pocket and he's being dragged on his side along the driveway by his sled dog team. He also describes watching wildlife do amazing things we didn't think they did. (Buffalo play games.)
Awesome Book, Bought by Mistake Rating:
5 / 5
I thought it was going to be about some kind of arctic triathalon. It was soooo much more. Paulsen's prose is earthy and engaging. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dogs, Alaska, or gritty outdoor tales.
