If you liked this book, then read "For Love Of Pete!" The Story of the Boy Who Played the Taps on Iwo Jima By Penelope Dyan. Both books are great tribute to our military men. There is a list of the known dead of Iwo Jima at the end of the Dyan book.
a real eye opener

My grandfather, who recently passed away, fought on Iwo Jima in the Marines 4th Division, and saw this flag raising. Not only was the story of the flag raisers very moving, but the rest of the story - the pieces in between - were also, if not moreso for me... as I read, with each sentence, I thought "Wow, my grandpa was there!" And by the Grace of God, he lived through it.
This book is well written and researched. I was extremely pleased with it, and just purchased my 2nd James Bradley book.
If you have any interest in Iwo Jima, not necessarily just about the flag raising, this is really a great read!!
Good battle narrative with some dull parts

I like to read military non-fiction books to enjoy the sacrifice and bravery of soldiers on a battle field which this book does a good job of delivering. But there are two parts of the book that drag for me: one is the beginning of the book where you have to read way too much detailed information about the flag raisers' dull lives before they entered the military service; and the other is at the end of the book where the author again gives way to much information about the "Bond Tour" when the 3 flag raiser survivors go around the US to collect money for the war. I think he could have done it in a few paragraphs for each chapter, without so many boring details.
But as I said before, this book does a good job of delivering the details of the battle for Mount Suribachi, and the rest of Iwo Jima Island. The battles are well described and so full of action that it totally justifies the money I spent for this book.
