A Showdown With Evil
Rating: 5 / 5
After I read Nocturnas I was in love with Shawn Ryan. It took me forever to locate his debut. Thanks to Amazon I finally found Brethren. Thank you so much Amazon! Shawn Ryan definitely has a way with words. His spectacular use of imagery and explicitly detailed scenes make for an extremely vivid page-turner. Ryan also has a gift of mastering the dialog between characters, making them seem down to earth and not pretentious. Detective Jason "Jazz" Medlocke is such a real and believable character. When Jazz is sad or upset, the feelings come right over the page and engulf the reader. The reader can identify with his broken heart over his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Claire, who were killed in a car accident. The reader can also almost feel the tingling sensation in their fingertips when Jazz encounters Moloch. The evil that radiates from the beast mixed with the radiation from Jazz's whole-being add excitement and suspense to the novel. I wish I had that golden aura! It was impossible to put this book down! Recommended? Most definitely! Just as Ryan's second novel (Nocturnas), this book deserves a second read! One question though... Why is this book out of print?
