This is a fabulous trilogy which I just can not put down. I am now on Abhorsen - the third book of the trilogy - which I began to read in my kitchen as I received it. I just finished the second book last night, and couldn't wait to sink my teeth into this one.

My daughter (13 yrs) read the trilogy first and sponged it into her soul.
We talk about whether it should be made into a movie... she says "no", but I am a photographer, so part of me would like to see this in motion. On the other hand, they would probably ruin it. We did however agree, with a laugh, that perhaps one day we will own a white cat named "Mogget"! This is the best fantasy - no! Best series - I have read in years! An all absorbing tale that wisks me away to a realm of magic, lore, and adventure.

Highly recommended!

We will be looking for Garth Nix's other books as well as he is a fantastic read!

Enough to make me read on

This is what I would consider `high fantasy' - it's not just magic, it's Charter magic. The emphasis on the terms like that made me feel somewhat detached from the story. It felt like he was kind of ramming the world at me, overpowering me with the specifics of the world versus just using more `normal' terms and telling the story. This is when I realized that while I have a great deal of respect for people that can build entire worlds and universes different than our own (I do so love Discworld!), I'm not the sort who particularly enjoys reading about it when they use terms and phrases that seem... campy and corny, in my mind. But then, it is a juvenile book!

Worlds aside, the storyline was quite good. The journeys into death were well-written and interesting, the characters were likable, and the plot was fast paced enough to keep me entertained and reading. I didn't like it as much as I enjoyed his other series, though I will probably continue to read both.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys high fantasy and, well, zombies!

sabriel is a terrific, fully realized fantasy novel. the young female heroine will appeal to young readers though it does deal with some dark themes. plot summaries abound in other reviews so will not repeat that . suffice to say that this is a great read and, unlike so many series, the following books are even better than the first.
