Loved this book
Rating: 5 / 5
I read this book many years ago when I was in 6th grade, actually my teacher read it to us. she found out that Jennings Michael Burch went to different schools around the country to talk about his life. he came to my school the following year. a few years laer when I was in 9th grade he came back, a few years before that I had written him a letter about how much I loved his book. when he came back the 2nd time he stayed at my house. we were his host family. I will never forget that. I have my autographed book with me. IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ THIS BOOK, READ IT. It will make you cry, so have a box of kleenex next to you.

Excellent Book!
Rating: 5 / 5
The author does an excellent job giving the point of view of a child in this situation of child neglect and abuse. The boy's mother would frequently run into difficulties with her health and mental illness and drop him off at an orphanage with no explanation. These places traumatized the children even further- you gotta love the priorities of the Catholic Church. With the exception of one nun, the rest were sadistic in the treatment of the children. Most of his experiences with Foster care were very sad. People taking in foster children for the money is a bad idea. The money from the state is supposed to be REIMBURSEMENT for money spent on the child- NOT PROFIT. This boy was smart and caring and did a remarkable job surviving the circumstances.

sad yet wonderful read
Rating: 4 / 5
not as disturbing as "Running with Scissors", but just as sad. This book is definitely sad instead of funny. I really enjoyed it.
