Virtual Humans: A Build-It-Yourself Kit, Complete With Software and Step-By-Step Instructions
Book: Virtual Humans: A Build-It-Yourself Kit, Complete With Software and Step-By-Step Instructions
Written by: Peter M. Plantec Ray Kurzwell Ray Kurzweil
Publisher: American Management Association
Average Customer Rating: 4.5 / 5

Plantec is Back-Stabbing the People that helped his Research
Rating: 1 / 5
Why does peter plantec, spend so much time writing bad reviews about the book that was written before his?

The book author of 'build your own army of web-bots', actually helped peter plantec with his virtual human research; spending hours for about a year with long distance phone calls and emails answering plantec's endless questions about virtual humans, then plantec spends hours for a few years now, attacking the very person that helped him with his research for his own book. Unbeleivably Nasty Sick Behavior from Plantec !

amazon has allready removed peter plantec's older nasty irrelevant reviews, where he actually made nasty comments about the older web-bot book author's racial and ethnic background.

See latest plantec's nasty reviews about the book 'build your own army of web-bots within 24 hours' which was written and published a few years before plantec's; plantec also uses the username 'quinbould knowledgebuff' and 'thenar'.

I can't beleive the book author of 'build your own army of web-bots within 24 hours' was actually promoting plantec's virtual human book, while he was stabbing her in the back, using her to write his own book, and smiling in her face.

Great for beginners, bad for anybody with experience
Rating: 4 / 5
This is an excellent introduction to the use of virtual actors in software. It covers all the basic ground: facial display and animation, voice generation and synthesis, home control, and simple agent technology. It includes a CD with lots of great free software (and demos of commercial software) that covers most of the subjects Plantec covers. It lives up to its billing as a "do it yourself kit" for virtual humans. I highly recommend it to those just putting their toes into the water.

I do not, however, recommend this book for that small group of people who already have familiarity with the subject. I bought it thinking that it might cover some material that I have missed. It doesn't, and I think that anybody working in the field will have a similar experience. I was particularly disappointed by the use of a simple branching boolean tree system for artificial intelligence. Agent technology has gone far beyond this. I recognize that it's appropriate for beginners, but again, this book has nothing to offer anybody with experience in the field.

The construction and psychology of an artificial entity
Rating: 5 / 5
Once I received my copy of the book I could not put it down. It is a very well written and absorbing book. It will give you the knowledge and insight to design your own virtual entity.
Besides being a manual for the creation of a virtual human, it is also takes a deep look into the psychology of the human face and body. You will learn more about your own psychology and increase your ability to read the body language of others, as well as being able to create your online alter-ego.
Get a copy and enjoy reading it.
