This is the first "adult" novel I ever read. I can vividly remember, at about age eight, reading whole chapters at a time aloud into a tape recorder and playing them back, imagining I had written this beautiful, emotionally charged prose. The book is out of print now, and I think that's a crime. This really is one of my favorite novels of all time. I'm an English major and an aspiring writer myself, and this is still in my top 10. Joyce, Faulkner, Pynchon, Chekhov, Davis-Gardner, Flaubert, Updike, O'Connor, DeLillo, Boyle. Yeah, okay, so my mom's the author, but it's still a knockout. I read it again recently and was floored. Definitely worth searching for used. Also check out "Felice" and the forthcoming, 13-or-so-long-years-in-the-writing "Plum Wine."
