If you deal with dementia, read this book
Rating: 5 / 5
A colleage handed this book to me casually, knowing I work with dementia patients and LOVE my dementia patients. She said I MIGHT find it interesting. I took it home and put it on my desk, not sure if I'd ever have the time to read it. I picked it up this morning, just to peak at it and found myself drawn into Jacqueline's world. I cried, I laughed, I shoke my head knowingly, relating to everything she wrote. Neglecting all the things I "planned" and "should have" done today, dinnertime approached, and I found myself finishing the last chapter! Over the years I've read so many books on dementia, Alzheimer's, memory loss, etc. but none hit you the way a personal story does. Not only was Jacqueline brave enough to share her very personal story with us, her writing was easy to follow and captivated me quickly! I felt like I was right there in the story the whole time. I have worked with dementia patients for almost 30 years now, starting as a caregiver and now as a nurse practitioner and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a loved one who suffers from this illness or is a caregiver. There are many great resources out there (although sometimes hard for families to track down), but this one makes you feel less alone and know that all things do eventually work out. Thank you for a wonderful book, so authentic. I believe that others can read this book and not have to go through as many difficult hardships that Jacqueline, the author, had to work through - the disease itself is hard enough to deal with!

An Unbelievable Journey!

In our lives we all deal with extraordinary challenges and when we have made it over each hurdle there are those times we refuse to look back and those times that we do look back and reflect. It is so wonderful for all of us as readers that after such a challenging period in Jacqueline's life she chose to look back and in doing so produced an inspiring masterpiece!

This book is a MUST READ for families and service providers. Whether you have family members/clients who are exhibting signs of dementia or have already been formally diagnosed with one of the many forms of dementia, OR you are preparing for the days ahead with the possibility of dementia developing in elderly family members/clients this book is a very important read. You will see very early on and throughout the text Jacqueline's courage and resilience during her struggle to bring the best possible quality of life to her parents in their elderly years, while also becoming very informed about dementia and realizing you are not alone.

The book is written in an easy-to-read style with lots of humor! (Yes, this is a serious subject, but without humor it only becomes that much more overwhelming and unmanageable of a situation.) Aside from the book itself, Jacqueline is also a fabulous public speaker and I recommend not only reading her book but also seeing her speak. She is able to captivate her audience, get us laughing, but also get us learning (I took notes & keep her informative handout in a visible place in my office.) Overall, Jacqueline is an amazing author, speaker, and elder care advocate. I thank her for all she has done for me and so many other readers!!!
